Our History

Our story is one of resilience, love, and dedication, rooted in the legacy of two remarkable women who shaped our vision and values: my grandmother, Ruby G. Wise and my mother, Jeannie Wise Barker.

Ruby G. Wise opened West Kentucky Mattress Manufacturing Company in 1947 which was later renamed Wise's House of Fine Furniture & Mattress Mfg. Co.

As a single parent to Louis, Sam, and Jeannie, Ruby relied on her deep faith in God to sustain her through life’s challenges. In a time when few women in Paducah owned businesses, she built Wise’s House of Fine Furniture with determination, integrity, and an unshakable belief that hard work and faith would see her through. Her resilience not only provided for her family but also created a lasting legacy of excellence and service. Ruby’s strength, guided by her trust in God, continues to inspire us today.

Ruby’s resilience defined her legacy. In a generation with few women in business, she overcame countless challenges, leaning on her faith to guide her through tough times. Wise’s survived two devastating fires that destroyed the business. After the first fire in 1957, Ruby wasted no time—by midnight, she secured an agreement to purchase the assets of a local mattress company and was back in business within three days.

In 1975, another fire destroyed the store, and though her family encouraged her to retire, Ruby chose to rebuild. She purchased the property from her landlords and constructed a 35,000-square-foot retail store with a 12,000-square-foot air-conditioned mattress factory.

In 1982, Ruby and Jeannie were featured in Bedding Magazine for Wise’s rich history and accomplishments—an honor for our entire family.

In 1994, at the age of 74, Ruby retired, closing Wise’s to pursue her dream of traveling the world. Reflecting on her career, she said, “Closing isn’t really that sad. Mostly, they’ve been pretty good times. I’ve had good customers and out of those made bushels of friends. So, I go out with many good memories and many good people who stood behind me and helped me.”

Upon Ruby’s retirement, Jeannie founded Barker Interiors, upholding the same steadfast dedication to her clients. Barker Interiors allowed her to share her expertise and love of Interior Decorating with many faithful clients.
While she cherished her work, her primary focus was raising her family. In recent years, we often talked about reopening a storefront together. Unfortunately, we were never able to see that through - together.

When my mom passed away in 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer, I knew I wanted to honor her legacy in a meaningful way and fulfill our mutual dream. That’s when Jeannie’s was born—a heartfelt continuation of our family’s dedication to helping others create spaces they love and celebrate life’s special moments. My birth announcement foreshadowed what was to come and I am honored to carry on the incredible legacy of the Wise women.

Jeannie built more than a business—she built a legacy of quality, service, and heart. Together, as a family, we are committed to keeping her spirit alive—not just in business, but in every act of kindness, every thoughtful detail, and every way we give back.

Meet our family—Natalie, Derek, Hudson, and Anna Brooke—the heart behind Jeannie’s! We tossed around plenty of names for the store, but in the end, Derek suggested Jeannie’s, and it just felt right. Without my mother and grandmother’s incredible legacy, we wouldn’t be on this path, and this store is a tribute to them. Rather than carry on Wise’s House of Fine Furniture, we chose to honor its legacy by letting its history stand untouched. Now, we’re creating something new with Jeannie’s—built on love, family, and timeless style. We can’t wait to welcome you in and share this next chapter with you!

At just four years old, Anna Brooklyn Wise Garber is already part of a proud lineage of Wise women as the great-granddaughter of Ruby Wise, granddaughter of Jeannie Wise Barker, and daughter of Natalie Wise Garber. She may one day choose to continue their tradition of quality, service, and community impact—or forge her own path. Alongside her brother, Hudson Edward Garber, her cousin, William (Liam) Brooks Barker, and cousins, Logan Barker, Dalton Barker, Gunnar Matthews and Elle Matthews (pictured above) the future remains unwritten, but one thing is certain: the values of hard work, dedication, and excellence will always be part of their story due, in large part, to the significant influence of their GiGi.

Giving back is at the heart of who we are. In memory of my mom and her courageous battle with cancer, a portion of every sale will be donated directly to support families in our community facing the unimaginable battle against cancer. It’s our way of continuing the fight and sharing hope with others.

Nestled in Midtown Paducah, next door to Magpies, our store is more than a shopping destination—it’s a warm and inviting space where stories are shared, legacies are honored, and dreams take shape. Stop by, say hello, and let us help you find something truly special. Click here for directions
With Love,
